Not everyone will have one in their area but if you do definitely utilize it. Mikes Discount is the one closest to me and it’s about an hour away. I trade off driving with a friend (who is also a family of six) so the driving costs are spread out a bit. The savings are worth it though as you can see in my previous post Discount Food Haul – Part Two: Price Comparison. I just went this week and stocked up massively on snacks -$1/box Johnny Pops retail is like $4.49. Only one flavor option and probably close to expiration but they still taste great. I bought 18 boxes. They took up the better part of a shelf in the freezer. Make sure you have space to store the bulk or time to preserve it before you buy.
How does this fit the crunchy life? The stock varies greatly visit to visit but they often have organic produce and packaged goods. So I’m still able to keep close to half my cart as organic and we all know organic doesn’t come cheap but it DOES at a discount store!!
Discount food stores generally have near expiration foods. I am one of those people who regards expiration/best by dates as very loose suggestions so this does not deter me at all. However if you are a stickler for dates this one might not be for you. You will be missing out on great deals though.
Another benefit to shopping at a discount food store is saving perfectly good food from going to the landfill.
